Chronic sinusitis occurs when the spaces inside your nose and head (sinuses) are swollen and inflamed for three months or longer, despite treatment. This common condition interferes with the way mucus normally drains, and makes your nose stuffy.
Sinusitis can be triggered by a cold or allergies and may resolve on its own. Chronic sinusitis lasts up to eight weeks and may be caused by an infection or growths.
What does this treatment involve?
Sinus Surgery involves removing infected parts of the sinus passages and openings to the sinus passages are widened. The procedure can take a few hours with you asleep. After surgery, you will need to visit your surgeon’s office for sinus cleanings (Once a week or so)
Medications, by mouth or your nose, are used to reduce the infection and inflammation in your sinuses. Treatment can last a few months.
Which treatment option gives the best chance for short term improvement?
Surgery will give most patients immediate relief of nasal obstruction.
Relief from medications is generally a slow, gradual process.
Which treatment option gives the best chance for long term improvement?
Surgery is effective and indicated for patients whose symptoms have not been relieved with medication. However, it is rarely a complete cure. Some patients continue to have symptoms after surgery
Even if your symptoms are controlled initially with medications, many patients require repeated rounds of medications. 34 in 100 patients who initially chose medical management end up having surgery.
What are the risks?
Common risks from surgery include bleeding, scarring, and continued sinus symptoms. More severe risks are rare. However, 1 in 1000 patients will experience leakage of fluid around the brain, injury to the eye , or loss of their sense of smell. 70 out of 100 patients will need revision surgery especially if you have nasal polyps.
All medications including antibiotics can carry risks of side effects and allergic reactions. When sinusitis does not improve with medications, 1 in 10,000 patients may have complications such as meningitis (brain infection) or vision problems.
Will the treatment hurt?
Most patients describe the pain from surgery as mild to moderate, requiring prescription pain medication for 1-2 days after surgery followed by over-the-counter pain medication for a few more days.
Taking the medication should not be uncomfortable.
I want to give Dr Venkatraman my sincere thanks and highest recommendation. I have been recently addressing a health issue and needed an unbiased recommendation on what path to consider for treatment. I trust my doctors-- but I wanted another opinion. Dr. V evaluated my records and provided me a thoughtful and unbiased evaluation on how to proceed. But more importantly, he met with me, listened and explained those options to me in a caring and considerate way. I highly recommend his service."
One of the smartest MD's and most thoughtful.
